The founding story is almost a parable. Kohler's move into plumbing began in 1883, when the company enameled a cast iron trough and offered it as a bathtub, and that instinct, to make the practical beautiful and the beautiful durable, still runs through the line. The company remains family held into a fourth generation, led by David Kohler, and headquartered in the Wisconsin village of Kohler.
What that gives a designer is range without a drop in register: complete bath and wellness suites, bold color where a room wants it, quiet neutrals where it does not. Kohler through our designer partnerships
Kohler is a partner brand for us rather than a resident line, and that shapes how the work is done. The conversation happens on the drawings: which collection carries the room, which finish holds against the cabinetry and stone already specified, and how a bath reads next to the kitchen it shares a house with.
Finish is usually where that gets decided. Kohler plates its physical vapor deposition finishes, French Gold and Brushed Moderne Brass among them, in a four-layer process, and carries a powder-coated Matte Black alongside them, which is what makes a coordinated bath possible in a house whose hardware is already settled. Kohler organizes its faucets, showering and accessories into named collections, and choosing between them is usually the first design decision on a bath:

the vintage-detailed family, drawn from period forms and finished as a coordinated set.

18-gauge stainless steel, with a cutting board, racks and a colander that slide on integrated ledges to work across the bowl rather than beside it.
Farmhouse and cast iron sinks
the apron front, and the enameled cast iron the company has made since the beginning.

the same two design registers carried out of the bath and into the kitchen.

Where Kohler has taken the bath

Anthem and Anthem+ digital showering
Anthem drives up to twelve water and steam outlets from one control; Anthem+ reaches beyond twelve and adds steam, sound and light.
Stillness Bath
a tub reminiscent of Japanese soaking tubs, whose rim overflows into a wood moat grate; the light, fog and aroma come from a separate experience tower.
Numi 2.0 intelligent toilet
cleansing and automatic functions with ambient lighting, audio and voice control.
Each of these carries real rough-in and control requirements, which is why they belong in the plan early rather than at the fixture-selection stage.
The company pushes at the material from the other side too. Daniel Arsham's Rock.01, made with Kohler, sets a 3D-printed vitreous china basin on a hand-poured brass base, and his Divided Layers installation was shown at Milan Design Week. Kohler has framed its environmental commitments as Believing in Better, has set net-zero operational goals for 2035, and runs a WasteLAB that takes landfill-bound manufacturing waste, among it foundry dust, waste enamel and pottery cull, and converts it into tile collections and a sink.
